What is the Criteria the judges will be judging on??? |
ALL of the details for 2007 have yet to be worked out, so without saying anything for certain, last year the finalists were picked by Scene and I am not sure how, but I know that presentation helped. Here were the criteria for the Semi-Finals/Finals (with a few other things judges were instructed to watch for):
Contestants will be judged by 3 judges on 4 weighted categories giving a total possible score of 75 points:
1. Technical and Mixing ability (30%): Don't trainwreck, and if something bad does happen... how good is the recovery? Does the set flow?
2. Creativity & Originality (30%): This is where judges can add points for flare and rate track selection. Are they just playing the hits to solicite crowd reaction, or are they actually introducing the audience to new music, or finding a creative way to do both.
3. Presentation and Showmanship (20%): This includes all aspects of professionalism as well as how stage presence fits with the music being played.
4. Crowd Reaction (20%): Bringing friends will help, but Judges will be instructed to award points on the reaction of the entire room not on screaming friends.
What I think makes good panel of judges is a balance between 1) Promoters 2) Dj's with experience who aren't 'down with the underground' 3) Someone who is in the know about what to look for, who goes out to a VARIETY of spots, who likes to dance. Of that panel, I think the most important quality to look for are individuals who are unbiased.
I feel we hit that goal by abou 90% last year. The Semi-finals only had one dj, the person who won the previous year; three promoters, who look at a far different aspect of a performance than dj culture music peeps; and a writer/music person at Scene. The Finals had a dj who is very respected as unbiased; a person who may be opinionated but ultimately is going to weigh heavily on someone bringing the party; and a dj who has been around longer than all of us who travels -- all three of whom had very different musical tastes.
IIRC, no one got a 75, and everyone started with a three and moved up or down taking into consideration how the amount of people in the room effected the timeslot. VERY few people lost points. Judges handed in scorecards after each set.
Again, this discussion is very premature at this point. I just got excited to hear that it was going to happen again. 2006's battle was one of the biggest highlite's of my year and a lot of people, not just dj's, have been asking about it.
